Student Council
Student Council consists of students from 4th- 6th Grade. Students in student council learn about leadership, philanthropy, team building and organizational skills. Every October, two students from each upper grade class are nominated by their teachers to represent their class. They are then trained as student leaders and peer mediators. These students meet with Ms. Alvarez, Student Guidance Counselor, once a week during their lunch periods. The Student Council is responsible for assisting the school in organizing student led events throughout the school year.
Art Expo
Every spring the annual Art Expo is held at PS150Q. This one-of-a-kind gallery opening showcases diverse masterpieces created by over 500 students and is open to the public. Works feature student drawings, paintings, three-dimensional art, collages, prints, and graphic designs in a variety of art media. The exhibit is curated by art teacher Ms. Wine. Every year, Ms. Wine submits up to 4 entries for PS Art. PS Art has over 1000 entries and selects 100 for a juried show exhibited at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. In addition, Ms. Wine selects 2 works to be displayed at the Queens Arts Festival. Our students have won these prestigious awards in the past and will be announced at the Art Expo to highlight Ms. Wine and their achievements.
Chess in The Schools
Chess in the Schools serves New York City Public Schools classified as Title I. The School Program begins teaching chess to students in third grade as part of their academic school day. Our After-School PS150Q Chess Club meets on Tuesdays for two hours throughout the academic year. Through the Club, students are taught more advanced chess concepts. Our students participate in citywide tournaments held on the weekends, as well as the National Elementary Championships held in Nashville, Tennessee. Mr. Fitzko leads and coaches our chess club.
Students in grades 3, 4, 5 are eligible to join the Club, if you would like to add your child to our waitlist, please contact Eliana Jaramillo.
For more information about tournaments, please visit the Chess in the Schools website.
Chorus / Band
Any interested student may join the chorus or band, beginning in third grade. The chorus and the band rehearse two days a week during 7th period, and have a Winter and Spring concert each year. Extra-curricular events have included field trips to Carnegie Hall, participation in the New York State Music Association Festival, and singing the National Anthem at Citifield. Please direct any questions regarding chorus to Ms. Goodman and any questions regarding band to Mr. Malko.
Drama Dept.
Each year the school organizes and directs a musical for the school and the community. All fifth grade students are eligible to audition. All interested fifth graders in performing or volunteering on the production of the musical, please contact Mr. Pagano, our drama teacher. Several of PS 150’s musicals have won awards and grants for their hard work and dedication to the arts.
School Green Team
Students in grades 3-5 can sign-up to be part of our school’s Green Team. Ms. Meizlik helps the Green Team support our school recycling efforts by attending training during all lunch periods, checking that every room in the school is recycling properly, and educating all students on the importance of “staying green”.
Technology Club
Students in the Technology Club work with the technology teacher, Ms. Vilain, to develop their abilities in working online. In 2020, students have also gone on a special field trip to Google headquarters with MS. Vilain.
